How to: Remove/Install a rim
This is how to remove a rim:
- First you'll need to remove the motor from the unit.
- Remove the pedal bracket from the side of the motor without the wire coming out of it.
- Remove all motor hub screws on the side of the motor without the motor wire.
- For that motor cover that we just removed the hub screws, pry that motor cover up and away from the motor. It may be fairly stuck on there and require some levers/back and forth rocking to get it off. It may also help to lubricate between the bearing and motor hub.
- Remove all motor hub screws on the opposite side of the motor, for the side with the motor wire.
- Be careful with this step, as getting your finger caught between the magnets can be dangerous. I would recommend finding something to set the motor hub on, with the wire side facing up. Then you can push down firmly and quickly on the rim only to pop it free from the motor hub. Make sure to push straight down to keep the magnets as intact as possible.
This is how to install a rim:
- Once you have the motor hub free of a rim, you can install a rim on it.
- Position the motor so that the wire side is facing down. Make sure the wire won't get caught in the magnets when you install the rim.
- Position the rim above the stator so that it's perfectly lined up. Make sure to not get anything caught between the magnets during installation.
- Once you're positioned correctly, place the rim onto the stator. Do it quickly and with intent.
- Now you can close the unit up. Reinstall the screws on the wire side first.
- Reinstall the motor cover on the non-wire side. You may need to tap it down with a rubber mallet to get it flush with the rim.
- Reinstall the motor screws on the non-wire side. When tightening the screws make sure to do so in a star formation.
